Frequently Asked Questions.

Who Are We?

TwillUSA.com was borne from an adhesives company founded by John Mahn Sr in the 1970s called General Fabric Fusing (GFF) located in Cincinnati, Ohio. As the business expanded, it eventually became Specialty Adhesive Film after heat-applied HTV Flock was invented for the athletic apparel market. Along the way, John Mahn Jr. completed his master's degree in Chemical Engineering and joined the company. The Father + Son duo of inventors continued to innovate, eventually being awarded 26 U.S. Patents. Their invention for a heat-applied Sports Film became the #1 product worldwide for decorating athletic jerseys. Fabric lettering has traditionally been sewn onto jerseys, but inventions by TwillUSA.com in the area of pressure-sensitive and permanent adhesive formulations allowed for decorating those athletic jerseys for the purpose of identifying player names, numbers, and teams. This fabric became known as "Tackle Twill" because of its durability and use in full-contact sports like football and hockey, and TwillUSA.com takes its name from that fabric. Now, more than 40 years later, we manufacture and distribute 30+ different HTV materials and performance fabrics in 100+ unique colors.

HINT: Coating the needle with silicone also helps to promote a clean stitch. All manners of stitching work well, including zig zag, satin, bean, and lockstitch.

Is This Product Similar to Heat'n Bond And Wonder-Under?

Our P600 Hot-Melt Adhesive is similar to both Heat'n Bond and Wonder-Under. However, the P600 is a solid hot-melt film while Wonder-Under is a non-woven web. Consequently, the film features more adhesive than a web of the same thickness and is more durable as a result.

What Is Sports Twill?

Tackle Twill is a generic name for the fabric lettering used to decorate athletic jerseys. Originally used for football, it is a very tough, durable material now used on all sports and cheerleading uniforms. Our registered version of it is called Sports Twill.

Why Buy Our Tackle Twill?

As the manufacturer, we offer Tackle Twill in more colors than anyone else. Available in 40 colors -- White, Tan, Cream, Black, Gray, Eagle Gray, Charcoal Gray, Cyan, Quebec, Cobalt, Columbia, Navy Blue, Royal Blue, Dark Royal, Lilac, Purple, Pink, Neon Pink, Greek Pink, Red, Devil Red, Cardinal Red, Maroon, 49er Burgundy, Brown, Shark Teal, Neon Green, Kelly Green, Dark Green, Orange, Burnt Orange, Texas Orange, Safety Orange, Tennessee Orange, Gold, Old Gold, Light Gold, Vegas Gold, Maize and Neon Yellow. Can Sports Twill Be Layered?

Yes. It can be layered 2 or 3 layers thick with Sports Twill or [guided-journey type='metallic' button_text="Metallic Twill"] or another applique material like [guided-journey type='felt' button_text="Sports Felt"] for multicolor designs. We recommend a maximum of 3 layers as 4 or more layers can be too thick to heat apply.

Is Sports Film 100% PVC-Free?

Sports Twill and our proprietary Hot-Melt Adhesives are 100% free of Polyvinyl Chloride ("PVC"). PVC contains dangerous chemical additives that can be harmful to your child's health.

Yes. The polyester-based Sports Twill works perfectly for embroidering patches.

Must I Sew The Tackle Twill Design Onto The Garment After Cutting It?

Yes. If you are looking to heat press the garment after sewing, we recommend our PSA Permanent Sports Twill or Permanent Sports Twill instead of the Polyback, Pressure-Sensitive PSA or Uncoated.

Can I Sublimate Onto Sports Twill? Which Tackle Twill Product Is Best For Sublimation?

We do not recommend sublimating onto Tackle Twill with an adhesive backing as the temperature required for sublimation is higher than the temperature at which the Hot-Melt Adhesive will activate. In our experience, this causes the glue to “come up” through the surface of the print. Therefore, we recommend sublimating onto Uncoated Sports Twill first, then applying PS965 5-Mil PSA Permanent Adhesive afterwards, which allows for heat pressing or sewing the transfer onto the garment(s).

It can also be die-cut or waterjet-cut.

What Is Sports Felt?

Sports Felt is a type of textile fabric made from non-woven Acrylic Felt. The material is very strong and durable, which makes it a favorite for activewear applications including retro-style logos and numbers for throwback jerseys, crafting, and appliques. Very popular on sweatshirts and beanies. In its uncoated state, it is somewhat flimsy. For this reason, we offer adhesive-backed versions which include stabilizers so that it's easier to cut and handle. Our adhesive-backed versions are called Polyback, Pressure Sensitive PSA, Permanent and PSA Permanent. NOTE: Uncoated Sports Felt product must be sewn onto the garment. As the manufacturer, we offer Acrylic Felt in more colors than anyone else. Available in 26 colors -- Black, Smoke, Silver Gray, Baby Blue, French Blue, Navy Blue, Royal Blue, Dark Royal, Purple, Emerald, Evergreen, Pirate Green, Red, Cardinal Red, Burgundy, Pink, Blush, Fuchsia, Gold, Antique Gold, Camel, Brown, Orange, Eggshell, Ivory and White.

Is Sports Felt PVC-Free?

Yes. The Acrylic Felt is 100% free of Polyvinyl Chloride ("PVC"). PVC contains dangerous chemical additives that can be harmful to your child's health.

Can Sports Felt Be Layered?

When sewn, it can be layered 2 or 3 layers thick on itself or [guided-journey button_text="Sports Twill"] or other applique material for multicolor designs. If used with Metallic Twill, we DO NOT recommend the [guided-journey type='metallic' button_text="Metallic Twill"] as the bottommost layer (background).

Can I Cut Sports Film On A Tabletop Plotter?

Tabletop plotters aren't 36" wide, so the material will need to be cut down first. However, once properly sized, the fabric cuts clean on many desktop cutters including Cricut and Silhouette Cameo. NOTE: May be too thick for some plotter cutters.

Does Sports Felt Have An Adhesive Backing?

Yes. The thermal adhesive backing provides stability for cutting and sewing onto garments. Its polyester-based coating has no PVC and can be cut on craft cutters, dies, lasers, Ioline flatbed cutters or even hand-cut. These Heat Press Adhesives are available separately for coating materials other than Sports Felt.

What Blade Should I Use To Cut Sports Felt?

A 60° blade works best for cutting Sports Felt. On some machines it's called the "thick" blade. Machines vary, but 150 grams of downforce is usually sufficient to get a clean cut.

How Is Sports Felt Different Than Scrim Felt?

Scrim Felt is a coarse, less dense -- albeit heavier and stiffer than Acrylic or Wool -- fabric typically used as a lining or background material. In the apparel world, Sports Felt is used as an applique material. It is a more densely constructed fabric used for finishing garments.

How Is Sports Felt Different Than Wool Felt?

The yarns are different. The Acrylic Felt is a manmade synthetic resin. As such, it washes better and needs no special care like Wool Felt.

How Is Sports Felt Different Than Sports Twill?

Sports Twill is a dense, woven material made from 100% Polyester, whereas Sports Felt is a non-woven material made from 100% Acrylic. Felt has a textured, fuzzy look that's popular on sweatshirts, hoodies, beanies and retro (throwback) jerseys. The adhesive systems used (Polyback, PSA, Permanent and PSA Permanent) are exactly the same for both products.

How Long Does Sports Felt Last On The Garment?

Acrylic Felt is washable. We have tested this material up to 50 wash and dry cycles in a home laundry environment without fraying, cracking or peeling.

Can I Use Sports Film To Embroider Iron-On Patches?

Sports Felt can be used for that purpose, although most patches are made from 100% Polyester Sports Twill.

Can Sports Felt Be Used To Decorate Letterman Jackets?

Letterman jackets are typically decorated with chenille, which are several times thicker than Sports Felt. Felt can be used on jackets, but it won't be as thick, which can be an advantage in terms of flexibility. Custom Felt designs are also less expensive, with more color options, and delivered faster than chenille.

Do I Have To Sew The Sports Felt Design After Cutting It?

Yes. After cutting, the Sports Felt should be sewn down onto the garment to hold the design in place permanently. If you are looking to heat press the garment after sewing, we recommend our PSA Permanent Sports Felt or Permanent Sports Felt instead of Polyback, Pressure-Sensitive PSA or Uncoated.
