Product Details

16.5″ Permanent Metallic Twill is a heat seal product designed to be laser-cut and heat-pressed onto garments without sewing. Similar to PSA Permanent except it does not have the peel-and-stick component. As such, it is somewhat limited in the number of ways it can be cut and applied. Its thick, 5-Mil non-PVC adhesive (P600 5-Mil 49.5″ Permanent) will not burn from laser cutting while it simultaneously prevents fraying. Permanent Metallic Twill works best for simple 1-color designs, and is NOT recommended for layering as a background layer. To achieve the appearance of a background layer, reverse pick (or weed) the inside of the design, leaving the top layer as the outside edge. When used for emblems or patches, simply die cut the design, then sew, merrow or satin-stitch the edges to finish it off. (View Adhesive Backing Options)

Application Info

Application Instructions — 16.5″ Permanent Metallic Twill

Recommended for use with the following fabrics: Acrylics, 100% Cotton, Polyester Knits (not Mesh), 100% Polyester, Poly-Cotton Blends, Poly Form and Cotton Caps. HINT: Run a lint roller over the transfer area (on the garment) to remove any loose threads or stray fibers.

  • Temperature: 340°F
  • Time: 20 seconds
  • Pressure: Firm

NOTE: Prior to pressing, preheat your garment for 5 seconds. Place the transfer onto the garment, then place a cover sheet over the design and voila! Time, temperature and pressure may vary if using an iron instead of a heat press machine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What Is Permanent Metallic Twill?

A: Permanent Metallic Twill is a heat seal product with metallized twill yarns designed to be laser-cut and heat-pressed onto garments without sewing. Similar to PSA Permanent except it does not have the peel-and-stick component. Available in 10 colors and sold in rolls by the yard.

Q: Can I Layer The Metallic Twill?

A: If sewn, it can be layered 2 or 3 layers thick on itself or Sports Twill or another applique material like Sports Felt for multicolor designs. We recommend Metallic Twill as the topmost layer ONLY if heat pressing, and a maximum of 3 layers as 4 or more layers can be too thick to heat apply.

Q: Is This Considered Tackle Twill?

A: Metallic Twill has been used as ‘Tackle Twill’ and for field logos, but is not normally considered tackle twill. Please consider our Sports Twill for that purpose.

Q: Is The Permanent Metallic Twill PVC-Free?

A: Yes. The Metallic Twill and our proprietary P600 5-Mil 49.5″ Permanent adhesive is 100% free of PVCs.

Q: Does Permanent Metallic Twill Have An Adhesive Backing?

A: Yes. The thermal adhesive backing completely seals the metallized twill yarns and provides stability for cutting + heat pressing onto garments. Its polyester-based adhesive coating has no PVC and must be laser cut. This adhesive system — (P600 5-Mil 49.5″ Permanent) — is available separately for coating materials other than Metallic Twill.

Q: Will The P600 Permanent Adhesive Gum Up My Sewing Needles?

A: Permanent Sports Twill is a heat seal product designed to be laser-cut and heat-pressed onto garments. This is sometimes referred to as “No Sew Applique.” As such, we do not recommend this product (or its P600 5-Mil Adhesive) for sewing.

Q: Can I Cut Permanent Metallic Twill On A Tabletop Plotter?

A: No. This product is intended to be laser-cut — which cauterizes the edges — as it may fray a lot when plotter-cut and heat pressed.

Q: What Blade Should I Use To Cut Permanent Metallic Twill?

A: A 60° blade works best for cutting Permanent Metallic Twill. On some machines it’s called the “thick” blade. Machines vary, but 120 grams of downforce is usually sufficient to get a clean cut.

Q: Do I Have To Sew The Design After Cutting It?

A: This is a heat seal product designed to be heat-pressed onto garments. If sewing is important, please consider our Polyback, PSA or PSA Permanent Metallic Twill instead, which can be sewn on or heat-pressed then sewn onto the garment, respectively.

Q: How Long Does Permanent Metallic Twill Last On The Garment?

A: We have tested this material up to 50 wash and dry cycles in a home laundry environment without fraying, cracking or peeling.

Q: How Is Metallic Twill Different Than Sports Twill?

A: These products are similar in that both are twill fabrics, but the Metallic Twill uses metallized nylon yarns whereas Sports Twill uses polyester filament yarns. There are also slight differences in the yarn size and the weave pattern.

Q: Can I Use Permanent Metallic Twill To Embroider Custom Patches?

A: Metallic Twill is not typically used for that purpose. Most patches are made from polyester Sports Twill.
