Metallic Twill FAQs.

What Is Polyback Metallic Twill?

Metallic Twill is a woven fabric that utilizes metallic yarns to create a shiny applique material. We coat the 16.5" Polyback Metallic Twill with our proprietary hot-melt adhesive (P600 1.5-Mil Polyback) so that it can be cut easier, layered, re/positioned and heat-pressed. This material has a hardness specification on the upper end, which makes it much easier to achieve a clean cut. Clean cuts are are critical for embroidery machines that demand a precise edge to put a zigzag or satin stitch on the design.

Can This Product Be Layered?

Yes. It can be layered 2 or 3 layers thick with other applique materials for multicolor designs. We recommend a maximum of 3 layers as 4+ can be too thick to heat apply.

Is the Polyback Metallic Twill PVC-Free?

Polyback Metallic Twill and our proprietary Hot-Melt Adhesives are 100% free of Polyvinyl Chloride ("PVC"). PVC contains dangerous chemical additives that can be harmful to your child's health.

Can I Cut Polyback Metallic Twill On A Tabletop Plotter?

Metallic Twill fabric cuts clean on most desktop cutters, including Cricut and Silhouette Cameo. All forms of cutting work on Polyback Metallic Twill — laser, plotter, flat-bed plotter, die cutting and shearing. NOTE: May fray a bit when plotter-cut and heat pressed.

What Blade Should I Use To Cut Polyback Metallic Twill?

60° blades work best for cutting Polyback Metallic Twill. On some machines it's called the "thick" blade. Machines vary, but 120 grams of downforce is usually sufficient to get a clean cut.

Does Polyback Metallic Twill Feature An Adhesive Backing?

Polyback's thermal adhesive backing (P600 1.5-Mil Polyback) completely seals the twill yarns and provides stability for cutting + sewing on garments. Its polyester-based coating has no PVC and can be cut on plotters, dies, lasers, or even hand-cut. This adhesive system is available separately for coating materials other than Metallic Twill.

How Long Will The Polyback Metallic Twill Last On Garments?

We have tested this material up to 50 wash and dry cycles without fraying, cracking or peeling. Polyback Metallic Twill is sewn down onto garments, so it should last as long as the garment itself.

Will P600 1.5-Mil Polyback Adhesive Gum Up Sewing Needles?

Our proprietary Hot-Melt Adhesives feature a needle glide additive designed to sew without gumming. Sharp needles work better than ballpoint needles. HINT: Coating the needle with silicone also helps to promote a clean stitch. All manners of stitching work well, including zig zag, satin, bean, and lockstitch.

Can I Use Polyback Metallic Twill To Embroider Custom Patches?

Polyback Metallic Twill is not typically used for that purpose. Most patches are made from polyester Sports Twill (Tackle Twill).

Do I Have To Sew The Polyback Metallic Twill Design After Cutting It?

Yes. If you are looking to heat press the garment after sewing, we recommend our PSA Permanent Metallic Twill or Permanent Metallic Twill instead of the Polyback.

How Is Polyback Metallic Twill Different Than Sports Twill (Tackle Twill)?

These products are similar in that both are twill fabrics, but Metallic Twill uses metallized nylon yarns whereas Sports Twill (Tackle Twill) uses polyester filament yarns. There are also slight differences in the yarn size and the weave pattern.
